In-Residence Advanced Management Certificate

As you advance in your career, the challenges and responsibilities you face increase – sometimes exponentially! The complexity of the decisions you need to make and the speed at which they need to be made is faster than you ever could have imagined. What made you successful in the past, may no longer be sufficient.

Your responsibilities increase from managing a limited number of people and things to being responsible for the success of a key component of the business – or maybe for the entire enterprise. You also need to understand and develop a sufficient level of competence in a broad range of topics that allow you to demonstrate your business acumen. You are also expected to understand how your part of the business fits into and contributes to the success of the entire enterprise.

Examples of the broad range of business expertise you now need to demonstrate competence in includes:

  • Accounting and finance – Do I know, and can I demonstrate, that the part of the business for which I am responsible is “in control”? Do I understand budgets and variances? Can I demonstrate that my part of the business is profitable? Can I make a persuasive case for investing in new equipment or processes or people? Can I understand and use the “language of business” effectively?
  • Strategy – what is the strategy of the entire organization? How does the strategy I develop for my part of the business align and support the overall strategy? Do I understand the value proposition for my part of the business and how we support the success of other parts of the organization?
  • Operations – Do I understand how my part of the business interacts with other parts of the business? Can I explain how the full system works? Can I help my staff understand our dependence on other parts of the business for our success? Do I make good business decisions that are in the best interest of the entire organization, not just my part of the organization?
  • Marketing – Do I know my customers’ needs and expectations? How do we meet those? What is the message I need to get across both internally and externally? How does my part of the business meet the brand promise?

This transition to higher levels of management responsibility can be daunting and seem overwhelming. The good news is that you can learn what is needed to run the business efficiently and profitably.

Most businesses seek to enhance their profitability. Profits drive research and development, build shareholder wealth and help create and maintain a lifestyle for the firm’s employees and customers. A second task for businesses is to innovate or offer new solutions to customers. Innovative solutions (typically in the form of products and services) may satisfy known needs or create new needs among customers, needs customers may not even be able to articulate. New solutions are also valuable because they often provide the firm with stronger sales and higher margins than existing offerings. The business function of marketing fulfills both the tasks described above.

Marketing identifies and satisfies customer needs and creates a mechanism of value exchange between the marketer and its customers. Customers receive solutions from the firm in exchange for monetary compensation for the solution. Marketing achieves these objectives using the marketing mix, including product (think customer problem solution), promotion (think communications), place (think distribution and customer experience), and price (think economic and financial outcomes). This course will enable you to address the complex marketing issues you face and begin to solve marketing problems in your careers.

Topics covered include:
  • What is Marketing and Why Should All Managers Care About Marketing·
  • Understanding Potential and Existing Customers· Understanding the Competition
  • Identifying Customers Using Market Segmentation
  • Positioning and Managing the Brand
  • Developing Successful New Products
  • Building Performance Value Through Pricing
