Fundamentals and advanced skills in data analytics

Analytics has become more important over the past few years as a source of competitive advantage for businesses as well as a tool for improved effectiveness and efficiency. Organizations around the world are looking at ways to leverage data to create value. This is being done using quantitative analysis and topics such operations research, statistical modeling, predictive analytics, text mining and associated IT tools.

This Kelley School of Business Executive Education Digital Badge Program will introduce students to a variety of analytics techniques and software tools. The online course begins with the basic of problem definition and data preparation, including strategies for missing values, outliers, and skewed distributions. Next, students will learn to identify appropriate analytical techniques based on data structure and problem definition. Techniques studied include linear regression, logistic regression, discriminant analysis, principle component analysis, cluster analysis and neural networks. These will be covered via a combination of video content and live, interactive class time with a variety of software including Excel and R.

Practical examples of data analytics skills students will learn in this online program include:

  • Sam needs to figure out what issues impact his customers buying decisions and what is just noise. 
  • Elliot wants to be able to predict the likelihood of success for a new product based on market data she has collected. 
  • Emily has a large data set from a recent survey and needs to figure out if there is a way to group respondents to identify specific customer markets. 
  • Fred has identified 15 statistically significant predictors for employee turnover, but that is too many variables to chase.He needs to identify 3-4 factors to create a strategy for retention without ignoring any of these important variables.

Test drive a graduate certificate or degree

When you receive your digital badge, you’ll have the option to take an Assurance of Learning exam to earn 3 credit hours that can be applied to the Business Analytics Graduate Certificate, which is one of several 12 credit hour graduate certificate programs offered by the Executive Degree Programs (EDP). The certificate can be applied to the Executive Degree online MS or MBA program.

Predictive Analytics for Business Applications Digital Badge

Two Flexible Paths: This program will consist of 10 live synchronous sessions held weekly and will include both practical exercises and quizzes. Videos will be available to watch prior to class that introduce theories or concepts. Class time (live virtual sessions) will focus on working with real-world data sets and learning how to apply those theories/concepts that were introduced in the videos.

  • Digital Badge Only: Successful completion of this program will earn you the Predictive Analytics for Business Applications  Digital Badge. Program cost is $2,700. Students can still choose to take the Assurance of Learning exam for an additional fee.
  • For Credit Digital Badge: Successful completion of this program will earn you the digital badge and 3 graduate credits from the Kelley School of Business. Program cost is $3,000. These credits can be transferred to the Business Analytics Graduate Certificate, which is a 12 credit graduate-level program.* Those 12 credits can then be transferred to the Online MS in Business Analytics or the Executive Degree Programs Online MBA. This stackable credential is ideal for students looking to ultimately complete a degree program within the Kelley School of Business, or for students whose tuition assistance programs require the courses to be credit-bearing for eligibility.

Learning Outcomes

At the conclusion of the course, students will be able to construct, validate, and interpret data mining and predictive analytics models using large data sets, and apply these techniques to marketing, finance, and operations problems. Students will complete weekly quizzes to demonstrate mastery of the subject matter and to qualify for the badge.

Upon completion of the program, students will receive one digital badge to share on their resume, LinkedIn profile, and other sites.

Predictive Analytics for Business Applications Digital Badge Overview

This program will consist of 10 webinars and will include both practical exercises and quizzes. After successful completion of the requirements listed below, students will be eligible to receive a digital badge signifying participation and achievement. Students will also have the option to take an Assurance of Learning exam after successful completion of the program, for an additional cost. If passed, you will earn 3 credit hours that may be applied to our Business Analytics Certificate, one of several 12-credit hour certificate programs offered by Executive Degree Programs (EDP). In turn, the certificate can be applied to a Kelley Executive Degree Program online MS or MBA program.

Expectations

Participants are expected to participate live in weekly webinars, along with completing the associated quiz following each session. To earn the Predictive Analytics for Business Applications digital badge, participants must complete at least eight of the 10 quizzes with a score of at least 80%. A maximum of two attempts per quiz will be allowed.

To earn IU academic credit for completing the series, a student must achieve an average score of at least 80% on eight of the 10 quizzes, complete four homework assignments, and pass the final exam. A $1,200 fee is required to take the Assurance of Learning final exam.
