Succeeding in Virtual Teams & Work: Curriculum
The Kelley School of Business is nationally recognized for its innovative online programs. This 12-week program is delivered by full-time faculty members from the No. 1–ranked Kelley Online MBA Program as recognized by U.S. News & World Report.
This certificate will require three to four hours of work per week, including a virtual live session. These synchronous sessions will include discussions and group exercises. In addition to live sessions that allow for real-time interaction with peers and faculty, there will also be discussion forums for information gathering and sharing. One-on-one time with faculty will also be facilitated on a case-by-case basis.
The curriculum is divided into four three-week courses. Each course begins the first full week of the month and runs for three consecutive weeks. Register for all four courses at once to earn your certificate or take individual courses as your schedule allows and complete all courses within two years to earn your certificate.

Work-from-home, telecommuting, remote works, and virtual teams are increasingly becoming norms in many organizations for a variety of reasons. Employees need to prepare themselves to excel in these changing work conditions that are strikingly different from a traditional face-to-face work environment. They need to master not only technologies, such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Slack, Jive, and Yammer, but also be effective in how they communicate through these technologies.
Research has shown that some employees feel lonely, left out, and less engaged working remotely, leading to low job satisfaction and performance, while others shine and perform better when working from home. This course will help you find an answer to this paradox—why some employees thrive in the virtual world while others find it challenging.
Leading virtual teams is both similar to and different from leading teams which work primarily face-to-face, because technology enables new ways of working. This course will describe principles and actionable advice for designing how virtual teams work to accomplish goals. It explains techniques for the two primary activities that teams perform: 1) creativity and generation, 2) making choices.
There are myriad tools and associated techniques that can be used in support of virtual teams. These include web conferencing tools like Zoom, Skype, and WebEx; file management tools such as Box, Dropbox, OneDrive, and Google Drive; collaboration tools such as Microsoft Teams, Google Docs, and Slack; and project management tools such as Jira, Basecamp, and Asana.
Often, how these tools are used is as important as the tools themselves. We will take an applied, case-based approach to understanding the effective use of these tools in a workplace setting. Participants will be able to apply the key learnings from prior modules to arrive at best practices for their contexts.
