What Are the Lean Six Sigma Belt Rankings?

There are four belt level rankings for Lean Six Sigma certification. From lowest to highest they are:

  • White: A white belt signifies a basic introduction to the fundamental concepts of Lean Six Sigma. Training is typically less than a day.
  • Yellow: Where a white belt introduces the theories of Lean Six Sigma, the yellow belt prepares you for action. Students engage in more in-depth concepts, preparing them to support other more experienced practitioners in Lean Six Sigma projects.
  • Green: Green belt certification builds on the DMAIC model learned in previous rankings, incorporating project and team basics, process and customer analysis, modeling processes, and more. Achieving green belt certification prepares students to lead smaller projects and become key team members for large, complex operations.
  • Black: A black belt certification develops the skills required to manage and lead Lean Six Sigma projects of any size. Practitioners at this level are on the road to becoming full-time masters of the craft.
  • Master Black: With five years’ experience as a Lean Six Sigma black belt and completion of at least 10 projects, you can become a master black belt. The most advanced concepts and methods are taught at this level. Achieving this makes you an excellent candidate for top-level, full-time roles such as coach, manufacturing process specialist, continuous improvement manager, and other specialized leadership positions.

Program Details

The certificate program consists of four courses, each 4 weeks long, for a total of 16 weeks of instruction. The capstone event in the final course entails a process improvement project simulation.

Lars Maaseidvaag, Ph.D.: Dr. Maaseidvaag is the simulation facilitator in the certification program. His work with MoreSteam includes the development of the web-based Process Playground discrete event simulation program. Students have access to this advanced learning tool in their capstone project.

Course Curriculum Highlights

  1. Introduction and Definitions: Learn the language and concepts of Lean Six Sigma. Study the Define-Measure-Analyze-Improve-Control roadmap for improvement. Gain insight on voice-of-the-customer process analysis and the tools used to create visual process flow maps, including suppliers, inputs, process, outputs, and customers (SIPOC) maps.
  2. Measurement: Learn measurement fundamentals, types of metrics, and basic statistical terms and forms of graphical analysis. Explore statistical process control.
  3. Analysis: Learn the tools and methods used to discover the root causes of problems. Explore developing and testing hypotheses.
  4. Improvement, Control, Simulation Capstone, and Exam: Gain proficiency with the tools used to implement improvements. Implement Lean methods of eliminating waste and improving process flow. Explore the control phase of the DMAIC process. Put it all together in the Sherlock Holmes Zombie Hunter Project Simulation Game capstone project. Test your knowledge and skills in the final exam.

Students receiving a score of 80% or higher on their exam earn a Lean Six Sigma Green Belt certification from the Kelley School of Business.
